Invictus review by DC Tauntaun
Based on a true story, Invictus successfully found a way into my heart and inspired me. Telling the story of how President Mandela and the national rugby team started the ball rolling on removing the fear that spawns racism. It is a bit long, and sputters a few moments, but the film can easily be forgiven for that with it's ability to portray the essence of Mandela's message. A political movie without the typical political overtones, as it tells a meaningful story in a way that the average person can relate. At the same time, the greatness of Mandela hit home when Matt Damon's character said "How does a man spend 30 years in a cell that size and then forgive his captors?". Clint Eastwood did an excellent job in telling that message of forgiveness and unity. In the end as I sat watching the credits, the inspiration was deep enough I thought of our current president and how he could really learn some lessons from President Mandela. As Bush catered to the Republicans for 8 years and left the democrats on the sideline, Obama has swung to the other side and caters to the Democrats leaving the divide in place and the country seperated. Another area the film suceeded, was that here was a film about rugby, that didn't feel like a rugby film. It's sports overtones didn't weigh it down at all, but played a role that helped lift the unity theme. Although some will be disappointted with it's slower pace, but I don't have a problem recommending it to those looking for a decent movie with an inspiring message.
