The first flaw, it shouldn't have been called The Day the Earth Stood Still as that suspense of humanities first visit from an alien visitor really wasn't there. Second, Did I already say they missed the whole point of it being a day that the earth stood still because an alien visited? The original focused on that aspect and the suspense was great. Here they introduced the aliens and went off on a sci-fi chase / road trip. Anyone who makes a comparison to the classic film is going to be greatly disappointed. So my suggestion is to go in thinking "here is an interesting idea for a sci fi film. Alien lands, runs from the cruel USA leaders that want to hurt him, girl shows humanity is worth investing in, alien leaves. That could be decent". With nothing to compare it to, you may find it entertaining. I don't know though, I can't stop thinking about how underused the big, tall defensive statue is in this one. He wasn't even necessary in this one, yet in the classic it was one of the main things you remember in the film. Also, did Al Gore fund this film? Pretty loud "save the earth" focus in this one. Jennifer Connely played the only character with any substance. Keanu Reeves played his part just fine, but no one wanted to see an alien in the way he played it.
Disappointing considering the film had potential and they really shouldn't have tied this one to the only classic because it sure didn't feel like The Day the Earth Stood Still.
