Review of Whip It by DC Tauntaun

For 60 minutes they couldn't decide what to focus the story on, educating the masses on roller derby, or building characters. Unfortunately for those 60 minutes they both keep the film from grabbing hold. There were some excellent roller derby moments in the first half and a better way to describe it is they needed to get from point A to point G real fast leaving the viewer shallow in feeling for any of the characters.
Luckily as the film starts to turn the corner Ellen Page and her role carries the overly dramatic script with her character and manages to hold it together. She played the role well and memorably. If for any reason to see it, she would be one as she managed by the end to have you hoping for her happiness. The editors and screenwriters tried, but it appears to me this isn't an overly experienced crew.
The character building finally came in the final 45 minutes and for a short time you get to live and learn with them from their struggles. I wouldn't say it was a stellar film by any means, but it's intentions were solid and noble. It's introduction to the general public the sport of roller derby succeeds. Although it doesn't cross the line to rated R territory, it deserved it's PG-13 rating. Now should I go get that tatoo or blue hair to go with my Yoda rollerblades.
