I had never read the book, so this perspective comes from one who had no preconceived notions of what should happen next.
The story was intriguing and had potential. They don't quite reach the status where one will just love the film, but from a pure fantasy stand point it does succeed there. Brendan Fraser is not his normal cheesy self and plays the role more serious. I actually liked this, but at the same time makes it less "fun" than his others. The story really did want to flow well, but apparently the book is quite long and they had to "scrunch" it together and you can feel it.
There are some scary moments, so children with nightmares easily, may want to wait a few years.
